ADVENT I SUNDAY
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT (YEAR B)
MK 13:33-37
MK 13:33-37
When Jesus tells us, "Be watchful! Be alert!", he is asking us to be faithful to him, to his word, and to his ways. This is the only way we could keep ourselves from being led astray by the erroneous teachings of false prophets. Note that false predictions of cosmic events could make us doubt God; false interpretations of God's words could confuse us.
We have to be alert so that riches and pleasures do not blind us to God's presence. Neither must we be too preoccupied with our duties and responsibilities that we do not recognize his acts of intervention in our life. The imperative "to watch" is actually an assurance that Jesus is always involved in our life. He intervenes and makes things happen. We only have to open our eyes, our minds, and our hearts to him.
The gospel challenges us to be more serious about our faith. We have to be truly committed to Jesus and never take him for granted. We must be neither complacent nor neglectful. We have to be focused on God, on his commandments, and on his call. We have to "be watchful and alert" for God.
